This craft workshop is a rare exception among those I introduce, as it focuses on a field other than textiles. It's metal engraving. I want to introduce it because the nameplates they can create here are just so incredibly cool.
Was it mere coincidence that Yumi, who lives in Kyoto, became a metal engraving artist?
When you travel through Kyoto, you'll often see intricate metal carvings in temple architecture. Or you might discover metal engraving techniques, refined over centuries, in the traditional hairstyles of maiko.
Yumi originally aspired to be a graphic designer, but after graduating school, she awakened to the beauty of metal engraving and became an artist creating jewelry and other pieces. Undoubtedly, within her lies the soul of the Japanese people, who have practiced delicate metal engraving for centuries.
For travelers visiting Kyoto from abroad, Yumi created a workshop where they can make these wonderful metal plates.
These are nameplates engraved with your name and a favorite Japanese motif onto a metal plate about 4 inches square, which you can display on a door, wall or desk back home.
Yumi's workshop is cluttered with tools in the best possible way. This suggests her workshop isn't just a superficial tourist attraction, but the central place supporting her creative work. She generously welcomes customers into this space. Being metal, they won't fade or deteriorate, ensuring your memories of Japan remain beautiful and lasting.
These are sample pieces. You can collaborate with Yumi to design your own unique piece. For example, if you were moved by Kyoto's cherry blossoms, you could incorporate a cherry blossom motif.
You can also include one Japanese hiragana character based on the sound of your name.
Yumi's work has always been about accompanying people through life's milestones. Examples include silver accessories shaped like spoons celebrating a baby's birth, or wedding rings engraved with names.
Why not preserve your Kyoto memories as a metal nameplate?
These pieces use copper and brass. Being metal, they won't fade or deteriorate, ensuring your memories of Japan remain beautiful and lasting.
Far from fading, the color gradually deepens with age. You can enjoy that as well.
This workshop is actually popular for creating souvenirs for family and friends back home. Though made of metal, the 4-inch square plate is lightweight and easy to carry. Plus, this design appeals to almost anyone.
