This studio, primarily specializing in dyeing kimonos, is located in the western part of Kyoto City.
Mr. Nishimura's sense of capturing Japan's beauty differs from that of the average person.
He does not find beauty in concrete forms like “flowers” or “butterflies,” but rather extracts beauty from formless things like the shifting colors of the sky, the wind, and light, freely expressing them on silk. These later become kimonos.
Such kimonos are rare; typically, specific motifs are depicted. Why does he pursue a different kind of beauty?
For him, the unforgettable memory of the outside world sparkling in the morning sun during his childhood was pivotal. At first, he didn't know how to express this special, formless beauty. While learning different techniques at multiple workshops, he acquired the skills to express the world within his mind.
He says that anyone can develop their own style by persistently pursuing their desired worldview and honing their craft.
His creative process feels remarkably free. Yet his mind holds thousands of recorded patterns—color combinations, brush techniques, moisture levels on the fabric. His sample books of colors and patterns speak to his meticulousness.
Mr. Nishimura isn't confined to the traditional form of the kimono as a product. The beauty of wind and light he wishes to express now adorns scarves, gracing the necks of those who don't wear kimonos.
Unlike many who prefer to keep their skills hidden, he shares his techniques. While his workshop doesn't openly offer experiences, he welcomes you if you come with Yuki.
First, in a two-hour session, we'll express cloud patterns on silk. Mr. Nishimura will teach you the brushes best suited for depicting clouds and the hand movements required.
Your finished piece can be delivered to your hotel within 2-3 days, or shipped to your home outside Japan— no pickup needed.
Tell Yuki your preferred day.
She’ll check the workshop schedule and meet you at the studio, then accompany you inside.

I grew up in Kyoto, and through my work as a textile artist I’ve become close to many dyeing and weaving artisans.
Their workshops aren’t tourist spots — they’re places where creative work happens every day.
Because they trust me, I’m able to bring guests inside and quietly share the human side of their craft.
It’s a small connection, but it makes the experience very different from a typical tour.
